Mc Brides’ Camp is located in the North East of the park. The camp is situated in one of the last true wilderness areas in Africa, where there are no roads and virtually no signs of humans. This intense wilderness quality, so hard to find nowadays, together with the full panoply of wildlife and amazing birdlife makes McBrides’ Camp so special. Chris and Charlotte are your hosts and guides, and enjoy sharing their many years of experience in the bush with their guests. They specialise in walking, boat trips and game drives. Chris is a well known author who has written several books on Lions.
Accommodation The accommodation consists of seven thatched two person chalets with en suite bathrooms. Beds have mosquito nets and each chalet has hot and cold running water, modern ablutions with a shower.
A comfortable verandah allows one to view the many species of birds and wildlife from the chalet. Chalets are built in the traditional fashion and consist almost entirely of natural materials available in the area, thereby adding to the African Safari experience Chris McBride Born in Johannesburg in 1941, Chris McBride is an avid student of wildlife and has lived in Timbavati and other areas of the African bush since he was a child. While doing the thesis for an Msc degree on lions from the University of California at Humboldt, two white lions were born into the lion pride the McBrides were already watching. This resulted in a book The White Lions of Timbavati and a Msc. Thesis. The book was translated into eight languages including Dutch, Japanese (Shokagukan), French (Robert Lafont), German (Droemer Knaur), Italian (Rizzoli) and Finnish. A feature movie was also made.
Chris published another book on nocturnal lion research in Northern Botswana in the late 70'sand early 80’s. A journal article also came out of this. Both books may be ordered via the Internet. Chris has recently featured in the "White Lion - King of Kings" documentary by David Adams Films as featured on Animal Planet. Charlotte has spent much of her life in the bush also, especially during her childhood, where she lived with her parents in the wilds of Zambia. She has many years of experience in running game lodges and will make you feel at home. The White Lions of Timbavati In this extraordinary place, an oasis in a world of disappearing and endangered species, what appears to be a new strain of lions has suddenly emerged. And for once, man, responsible for the destruction of so much wildlife, is in a position to use a whole battery of new and sophisticated techniques to protect and foster these unique animals - Temba, Tombi and Phuma; the white lions of Timbavati. (Order a copy from www.ukbookworld.com) Liontide In this remarkable book Chris McBride, author of the White Lions of Timbavati and Operation White Lion provides a dramatic record of his time with the night hunters of Savuti. This account of the ceaseless struggle between Africa's largest carnivore, the lion, and its prey hurtles the reader into the dust- swirled world of the Savuti Lion prides with all its uncertainty and sudden death. SOME REVIEWS OF LIONTIDE “……PRIDE OF PLACE…..” “This is an invaluable insight into lion behaviour, crammed with information and a book that will have pride of place on the shelf of any naturalist, whether amateur or professional”. John Michell, BUSINESS DAY, 4.6.90 “It takes a rare gift to combine raw scientific data with a personal vision and belief in things natural to produce a captivating narrative. Chris McBride’s book based on his work in the mystical Savuti channel area of Botswana is such a work.” PROF J du P BOTHMA, (former) HEAD, CENTRE FOR WILDLIFE RESEARCH, UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA.
The West Bank of the Kafue River is a roadless wilderness. We specialize in walks and walking safaris in this area. However, we also offer... However, we also offer... - Day game drives, (3Mb) - Night game drives, (6Mb) - Game viewing by boat from the upper deck of the Fish Eagle, (4Mb) - Fishing - Bird watching excursions. -- Fishing - Bird watching excursions. Two main safaris are offered:- 1. 3 or 4 Day Stay Daily morning walks from the camp, returning for a mid- morning brunch. These are modestly-paced, investigatory strolls to allow for a close scrutiny of whatever presents itself on a particular morning (a lion roar, an antelope alarm call), which could include the full range of life forms in the area; birds, insect, mammal; as well as the ecology of various vegetation types in the area. These walks are fascinating, and your guides have been engaged in such activities, though not continuously, for approximately forty years. Midday rest period - Afternoons In the afternoons, you may choose to go on another walk in a different area or for a ride on the river in the famous double decker Fish Eagle; an ideal way to enjoy the river and its sights. Or perhaps you would like to go fishing (yellow-belly bream, the largest bream are famous for their fighting and eating qualities and abound in the area.) Or you may decide to rest in the camp, from which game and bird (over 300 species) viewing is also excellent. 2. 5 or 6 Day Stay MCBRIDES BUSH CAMP We now have a new, official, bush or satellite camp near the river 14 kilometres downstream from our present camp. An ideal base for bush walks, the Bush Camp overlooks a traditional buffalo drinking place, from which at least 9 well-used game paths converge on the river. Herds of up to 400 to 600 drink there. There is a healthy pride of golden lions in the area as well, and the spot is pristine and very wild. This camp is rustic but comfortable, as is our style, and cater for a maximum of 8 people. It can be reached by a 3.5 hour drift on our Pontoon boat, the Fish Eagle, with good game viewing, especially in the dry season, from the upper deck; or by a 3.5 hour walk from our camp. Guests can also chose which option to use for the return to our camp. Typically, during a 2 day stay in the camp, there is an early morning walk, and a late afternoon one, in this very exciting game area. We are also exploring longer walks from the Bush Camp to interesting areas. Fishing is also excellent in this area, with bream of various species usually being the most sought after catch. We look forward to sharing this wild area with you.
