The most luxurious train in the world, Rovos Rail's Pride of Africa, will depart from Cape Town on this epic safari through Africa travelling a distance of 6 100 kilometres. Guests will board the beautifully rebuilt Edwardian Train and travel in the footsteps of such illustrious adventurers as Livingstone, Speke, Stanley, Burton, Selous. Lord Delamere, Blixen and Finch-Hatten. Rovos Rail has designed this safari for travellers who wish to re-live true adventure in complete luxury, comfort and security. This unique experience will not only enthral train enthusiasts but also provide guests with an incomparable way of travelling through the beauty of Africa.

This magnificent safari will take you through South Africa with short tours of the diamond town of Kimberley and the capital city of Pretoria. Then we visit the famous Kruger Park Game Reserve, before crossing into Zimbabwe, with another overnight stop at the Victoria Falls Hotel. The next day we cross the Victoria Falls into Zambia, Lusaka, the Luangwa valley and on to the incredible Tazara Railway line before arriving at Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania.

The one way 6 100km journey will take 13 days. Once there, guests have the option of visiting exotic Zanzibar, Mount Kilimanjaro, the Ngorongoro Crater and the wildlife paradise of the Serengeti. The Edwardian Safari will then depart Dar Es Salaam again travelling with its southbound guests back to Cape Town. An authentic African adventure.

08:30 Depart for full day tour of Cape Winelands, including a visit to a famous wine estate with lunch en route. Afternoon visits to Franschoek, Boschendal and Stellenbosch. Dinner and overnight at Hotel.

08:30 Depart for full day tour of Cape Peninsula (including Groot Constantia, Fish Hoek, Simon's Town, Cape Point, Chapman's Peak Drive, Hout Bay and Kirstenbosch). Light lunch en route. Dinner and overnight at Hotel.

Pre-Departure Information Dar Es Salaam
Thank you for considering travelling with Rovos Rail on this truly epic journey! In case you do choose to travel with us we would like to draw your attention to the following:

Dress

During the day, the dress is smart casual. Attire that is more formal is worn in the evening on the "Pride of Africa". A collar & tie is a minimum requirement, please.
With regard to the off-train excursions: It can get very cold during the game drives (open vehicles) and the Sunset Cruise on the Zambezi River, therefore warm clothing is strongly recommended. The excursion to Kundalila Falls involves some walking so comfortable walking shoes; sun tan lotion and hats are strongly recommended.

Health requirements (*Tanzania)

Yellow Fever vaccination (not compulsory).
*Epidemic Meningitis (esp. in dry season; Nov and Dec)
*Immunisation against Hepatitis A & B, Polio, Tetanus, Typhoid and especially Cholera is recommended.
High risk Malaria area
*Rabies and Bilharzia present

Currency

In South Africa one can only make use of South African Rand. All major credit cards (Master Card, Visa, American Express and Diners Club) are accepted.
For Zimbabwe, no credit cards should be used. All payments to be made in LOW denomination US Dollar notes. Any off-train expenses to be paid with US Dollar banknotes (low denomination).
Zambia and Tanzania, it is best to make use of American Dollars in cash form (hotels and major dealers will also accept credit cards).

On Board Services

A Medical Practitioner, Hair Stylist & Historian accompany the train at various stages

Cuisine and Ambience

Breakfast, lunch and a formal dinner are served in one sitting only in the charming Victorian atmosphere of the Dining Cars - meals, carefully prepared, are complemented by a selection of fine South African wines. Meals can be adapted to suit special requirements by prior arrangement.
The Observation Car seats 32 passengers and takes up the rear end of the train. At the centre of the train we have, when numbers dictate, a non-smoking Lounge Car, which seats 26 passengers in comfort. In maintaining the spirit of travel of a bygone era, there are no radios or television sets onboard and the use of cellular telephones is confined to the privacy of the suites

Laundry

There is a limited and simple laundry service on board comprising of household washers, dryers and steam irons. The turn around is 48 hours so the staff would not be able to handle a week's worth of washing. Please advise your hostess if your clothing needs specialist attention.

Rovos Rail Memorabilia

There is a small gift shop on board and at our station premises at Capital Park in Pretoria. Due to the varying exchange rates, the use of credit cards is preferred

Smoking

Smoking of cigarettes and cigars only is allowed in the privacy of the suites and in the back half of the Observation Car. Please do not throw flammable items such as cigarette or cigar butts off the train, as bush fires in Africa are a constant and dangerous hazard.

Scheduling Times & Routes

We cannot be held liable for any delays due to trains not running to schedule. Off-train excursions cannot be guaranteed and will only be undertaken if time and circumstances permit. Departure and arrival times are approximate and cannot be guaranteed. We reserve the right to alter our routing at any time between departure and arrival points

Gratuities

Gratuities for the staff are totally at your discretion. If you wish to show your appreciation in this manner, a suitably marked envelope is included in your information folder. Gratuities may be handed to the manager who then distributes any amounts collected by him on a pro rata basis amongst the staff on board

Passports & Visas

The onus is upon the client to ensure that passports and visas, as may be required, are valid. Please refer to visa information sheet.
*We suggest a MULTIPLE ENTRY visa for Zambia. Clients may wish to view the Victoria Falls on foot on the Zambian side, before entering Zambia by train (northbound).
Same situation for Southbound, perhaps on the day of leisure in Victoria Falls, clients may wish to re-enter Zambia again on foot.
