Cape Town The Whale Route

This is a self drive apckage that can be changed to a private tour for you.


THE OVERBERG WHALE ROUTE (June-Nov)

DAY 1

Depart Cape Town on the N2 national road to the east. Drive along Beach Road, Strand, one of the most popular and safest beaches along the False Bay coast. Continue through Gordon’s Bay tucked into a secluded corner at the foot of the Hottentot’s Holland and Kogelberg Mountains. Route 44 is a beautiful marine drive with several vantage points for whale watching. The Southern Right Whales are often spotted close to shore in season. Cruise through the pristine floral kingdom of Rooiels, Cape Hanglkip and Betty’s Bay. Visit the Stoney Point Penguin colony. Enjoy a leisurely walk in the Harold Porter Botanical Gardens and a lunch in the gardens. Continue through Kleinmond to Hermanus. Drive along the Eastern and Western cliffs of the Walker Bay in Hermanus in search of the whales. Visit the New Harbour. Hermanus is the main town for the harvesting of crayfish and abalone. Overnight Windsor Hotel Hermanus.

DAY 2

Explore the many beautiful curio shops in Hermanus. Vist the old Harbour Museum in the heart of the town. If we are lucky, we may meet Wilson, the only whale-crier in the world, announcing the wherabouts of the whales.coast of Hermanus. Take a leisurely walk in the Fernkloof Nature Reserve with fantastic views of the Walker Bay. Drive along the Klein River Lagoon and De Kelders to Gans Bay, home to the largest Great White sharks. Visit a factory shop to see the jaws of a six-metre giant that was caught in the nets by fishermen in Gans Bay. Continue on dirt roads to Elim Mission Station (dating back to 1824). Walk in the town and vist a monument, which commemorates the liberation of the slaves in The Cape in 1838, and the water-mill built in 1828. Drive to the southern-most tip of Africa, Cape Agulhas.

Arrive Arniston a quant little fishing village late afternoon.

DAY 3

After a late breakfast, we explore the coast for whales. Take a swim or walk on the pure white beach in search of whales.Visit the Shipwreck Museum in Bredasdorp where relics are displayed of some of the vessels that sunk off the coast. Drive through Napier to Caledon in the heart of the wheatfields. Caledon boasts with the largest malt-producing plant in the Southern Hemisphere. Stop at the Caledon Spa and Casino for lunch. After lunch we return back on the N2 to Cape Town. Drive over Houwhoek pass into the apple capital of the Western Cape. Visit The Orchard Farmstall for late afternoon tea and fresh farm produce. Stop at the top of Sir Lowry’s Pass for great views of False Bay and the Cape Peninsula. Arrive Cape Town late afternoon.

Due to the unpredictability of weather patterns, flowers and whales can not be gauranteed, although these are the peak periods. This route is popular throughout the year.
