On Bazaruto Island Rani has built community centres, provided transport facilities and access to water for local islanders. The education and training needs of local people remains Rani's focus with the building of schools and initiating adult literacy programmes. Also on Bazaruto Island, Rani has formed a partnership with local communities to conserve the ecosystem and assist the Bazaruto National Park staff with transport, communication and health care facilities. Teaching the importance of conserving local marine life and working with the authorities to counter illegal fishing activities is a priority as well as implementing a tag and release policy for fishing activities in conjunction with Durban's Oceanographic Institute (ORI).

Mozambique Diving - Bazaruto Island

The protected Bazaruto Marine National Park is a scuba diver's paradise, with crystal-clear waters and a range of dazzling soft coral ridges and reefs to explore. A host of exciting dives can be experienced here with reef fish such as snapper and surgeon, as well as potato bass, kingfish, barracuda, manta rays and reef sharks to be seen.

Above the water dolphin are frequently encountered whilst humpback whales can be sighted between August and October and whale sharks between April and July. Leatherback, loggerhead and green turtles are often seen in the water, coming ashore to lay their eggs on Bazaruto's sandy beaches. You may also be lucky enough to see a rare dugong - part of the largest viable breeding population in the western Indian Ocean.

Bazaruto Island's superb scuba diving locations include:

  • Brindle Bass Ridge (North Point) - large reef (18 metres) with impressive concentrations of snappers, angelfish, rubberlips, brindle bass & reef sharks.
  • Potholes (North Point) - series of shallow potholes (12 metres) often sheltering black-tail reef sharks.
  • Manta Ray Reef (North Point) - flat reef (15 metres) with spectacular concentrations of anemones and clownfish.
  • Rainbow Runner Reef (North Point) - (25 metres) with impressive accumulations of green-tree and whips corals.
  • Turtle Ridge (North Point) - narrow ridge (14 metres) frequented by turtles and game-fish such as barracuda.
  • Two-Mile Reef - well known for excellent snorkeling inside the reef and for exciting dives on the outside (6-21 metres).
  • Zenguelema Point - this dive site, with a depth of 21m, is located on the western side of the island and is home to schools of Reef Fish, Scorpion Fish, Crocodile Fish and the occasional Stone Fish.

Our on-site diving instructor co-ordinates the diving courses, from beginner courses to more advanced reef diving, and plans every diving trip taking care of all the details, from safety precautions to the final dive entry. We use PADI Instructors and Dive Masters as a minimum standard and we do not conduct technical or deep-water dives that warrant a chamber.
