Day 1 - Bird Island and Muisbosskerm
Head north along the coast via Bloubergstrand with its picture postcard view of Table Mountain.
Travel over the Piekenierskloof pass to arrive at Clanwilliam for lunch and a visit to the museum.
In the mid afternoon, travel to Lamberts Bay, a traditional West Coast fishing village, to visit Bird Island which is the breeding site of thousands of comorants, gannets, penguins and other bird species. We enjoy a stroll along the beach followed by a traditional West Coast dinner at the open air seafood restaurant of Muisbosskerm. 3 nights at The Rectory in Clanwilliam.
Day 2 - Mountains & Cederberg Wine Cellars
Short tour of Clanwilliam, one of the oldest towns in South Africa. Next we travel along the tranquil Clanwilliam Dam and take a scenic drive up into the stark beauty of the Cedarberg mountains. Time for a short stroll (optional) before a picnic lunch at the peaceful Algeria Forest Station where we can swim in the inviting swimming hole in Summer. I n the afternoon, we visit the Cederberg Wine Estate and the superb Stadsaal rock formations. Return to Clanwilliam in the late afternoon.
Day 3 - Sevilla Trail and Wupperthal Mission
Today we journey over the magnificent Pakhuis pass with its curious rock formations and colours to ‘agter-Pakhuis’. We first visit the San (Bushman) rock paintings along the Sevilla Trail (non-strenuous trail). Here we gain an appreciation of the San way of life and art. Afterwards we enjoy a scenic picnic lunch en route to the picturesque mission village of Wupperthal, seemingly lost deep in the mountains. On our return we stop at the Englishman’s grave, a poignant reminder of the Anglo-Boer struggle which raged nearby.
Day 4 - Clanwilliam and Tulbagh
Some time at leisure for visiting the art galleries and craft shops. An optional visit to a citrus/table grape farm. En route to Cape Town we explore the charming 18th century village of Tulbagh with its whitewashed Cape Dutch houses, and enjoy a traditional Cape lunch.
