KENYAN CIRCUIT

Nairobi to Nairobi 10 Days Kenya

Kenya is one of the finest, and undoubtedly the most famous, safari destination in the world.  It is a seductive and beautiful land that delights and fascinates all who fall under its spell.  Experience Big 5 game viewing, outstanding scenery, beautiful lakes and fascinating tribal people.  Combining the incredible wildlife spectacle offered by the Masai Mara, with the stunning beauty of the Great Rift Valley and the fresh and soda lakes of Naivasha and Nakuru brings together the best of Kenya in one exceptional tour.

DAY 1: NAIROBIOur first day is spent in the bustling African city of Nairobi. The city, gateway to your safari experience, is not a prime tourist destination but it does offer attractions that are well worth visiting. Prepare for some interesting wildlife encounters at the Giraffe Centre and the Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, in Langata. Enjoy a visit to the home of the pioneer coffee farmer, Karen Blixen - author of "Out of Africa". Step back in time and gain an insight into this remarkable woman's life. Views of the Ngong Hills can be admired from the beautifully landscaped gardens.

DAY 2: LAKE NAIVASHAFrom Nairobi we travel west to Lake Naivasha, a birdwatchers dream come true. Home to prolific bird life and Africa’s largest concentration of African Fish Eagles, the Lake is also famous for its hippo population. Nearby is Elsamere, former home of Joy Adamson, who raised and released Elsa the lioness, immortalized in the book and film “Born Free”. The house is now a museum where we listen to a presentation describing her lifetime of conservation work, before enjoying high tea in the gardens.

DAYS 3 – 5: MASAI MARANamed for the Masai tribes people (the traditional inhabitants of the area) and the Mara River which divides it, the Masai Mara is Kenya's finest wildlife sanctuary. We spend two memorable days in the park. Everything about this reserve is outstanding. Famous for its exceptional population of game, gentle rolling grasslands ensure animals are never out of sight. It is a place where Masai warriors share the plains with hunting lions, mighty herds and the timeless circle of life.

DAY 6: LAKE NAKURU NATIONAL PARKLake Nakuru is a shallow, soda lake, set in a picturesque landscape of woodland and grassland. The Lake, first gazetted as a bird sanctuary in 1960, is home to huge numbers of greater and lesser flamingo, which move about in a shimmering mass of pink.  Lake Nakuru National Park, has the highest concentration of rhino in East Africa, as well as other game including lion and leopard, and the rare Rothschild's giraffe. This small park is well protected from poachers and the rhino have thrived as a result. We have the opportunity to visit the souvenir markets of Nakuru and sample the fine coffee that is grown in the region.

DAY 7: LAKE BARINGO, Lake Baringo lies in the solitude of the semi-desert of the northern Rift Valley, a haven of beauty in harsh, rugged but majestic surroundings. In this fresh water lake hippo and crocodile abound but most visitors are entranced by the dazzling array of colourful birdlife. Bird watching is by boat or on foot. The area is home to the Njemps tribe and you may wish to take some of their traditional crafts home with you.

DAY 8: NYAHARURU / THOMPSONS FALLSTravelling east, we stop at Nyahururu, Kenya's highest town, set amongst lush tea plantations and conifer forests. We visit the 75m Thompsons Falls and enjoy some free time walking or simply relaxing.

DAY 9: MOUNT KENYASnow capped Mt Kenya, Africa’s second highest peak, is regarded as the realm of Ngai, god of the local Kikuyu people. Traditionally, all Kikuyu homes were built to face this sacred peak. The small frontier town of Nanyuki, well known for lying on the equator, affords us beautiful views of the mountain as we begin our return drive to Nairobi.

DAY 10: NAIROBI                                 Our tour ends back in Nairobi. In the evening, there is the option* to enjoy a unique dinner experience at the world famous Carnivore restaurant. Every type of meat imaginable is roasted on traditional Masai swords (skewers) over a huge, visually spectacular charcoal pit that dominates the entrance of this open-air restaurant.                                                                                                                                                  *Optional, at own expense.
