Phinda Walking Safaris

Nothing can compare to seeing the incredible natural beauty of Phinda Private Game Reserve on foot. The lush forests, pristine bushveld and captivating vleis are alive with birdsong, insects and the sounds of the South African bush. Discover the adrenaline rush of encountering animals on foot whilst enjoying a three- to five-hour morning walk, and short pre-sunset walk and night-drive combination. Identify tracks and insects, birdwatch, and learn more about Phinda’s diverse habitats and facinating ecology.

Exceptional game viewing: Whether observing a herd of elephant from a safe distance or tracking rhino, the excitement is never far off. Thrilling evening walks are followed by dramatic night game-drives which reveal the thrilling world of predators on the hunt.

Safety on a Walking Safari is our highest priority:
CC Africa’s rangers undergo intensive specialised instruction at Inkwazi Ranger Training School at Phinda, and each Walking Safari begins with a comprehensive briefing on how to behave when encountering animals on foot. An armed ranger and tracker accompany guests throughout.

LOCATION

Phinda Walking Safari Camp lies within the 15 000 hectares/3 800 acres of Phinda Private Game Reserve, in the Maputaland region of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Phinda neighbours the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park – a World Heritage Site –- to the east and is only 30km/19 miles due west of the white-fringed beaches of the Indian Ocean

ACCESS

Two Walking Safari departures weekly. Federal Air operates a daily flight from Johannesburg International Airport to Phinda Airstrip. Daily scheduled flights by SA Express from Johannesburg International Airport to Richards Bay Airport. Transfers from Richards Bay Airport to Phinda are available by road (approximately two hours) or by light aircraft (approximately 30 minutes). Transfers are at an additional cost and subject to availability of aircraft and weather conditions. Transfer by road from Durban International Airport to Phinda in an air-conditioned minibus (three hours) and a one-hour air transfer is also available. Phinda is accessible by road by two-wheel drive vehicle -- driving time from Johannesburg is six hours and from Durban is three hours – on excellent roads from both cities.

ACTIVITIES

Specialised, highly trained professional rangers provide in-depth interpretive wilderness experiences and excellent birding. The four-day/three-night programme consists of a 4 – 5-hour morning walk, and a short pre-sunset walk and night-drive combination, Tracking animals on foot is unforgettable.

Weather - Subtropical climate with hot, humid, wet summers (September to April), warm to cool, dry winters (May to August)

Rainfall - Rainfall averages about 1 000mm/39" per annum. Much of the rainfall comes in the form of short, intense afternoon thunderstorms. Rain can be expected 12 months of the year.

Temperature - Daytime temperatures in summer may rise above 35°C/95°F. Nights in winter rarely drop below 10°C/50°F.
