Kenya Annual Migration

Below is a brief Introduction to Kenya see our Sample Trips Section for a variety of packages.

Kenya has a great coastline wich portions of are a UN heritage protected area. Watamu is a sleepy fishing village on one of the top ten beaches in the world. Opposite are teeming coral reefs and stretching back is the intriguing Sokoke forest reserve.

Flanked by Mida creek (turtle breeding area) Watamu is a designated UN area of outstanding natural beauty.

We offer a unique Spa/Fitnes program wich can be combined with a Safari, and other Spa/Safaris packages for Kenya Ask us

Larger than Germany, equatorial Kenya has five neighbours and three major water bodies - the azure Indian Ocean, Lake Victoria and Lake Turkana. Kenya's cultural mosaic is Africa in miniature, with almost every main African tongue spoken and over forty distinct ethnic groups.

Kenya is one of the only places in Africa where you can watch a lion-kill in the morning, then drift over coral reefs in a glass-bottomed boat off tropical Mombasa in the afternoon; or wander back in time through the Islamic island of Lamu, or buy sisal baskets, semi-precious stones, beadwork, ebony Makonde and soapstone carvings in one of the hundreds of market places. Take off on an elegant balloon safari over the Masai Mara, visit the nomadic, ochre-clad Maasai, gaze at the breathtaking views of snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro or watch pink flamingoes rise over the Rift Valley soda lakes. Be one of the few who witness the mid-year spectacle of over two million herbivores thundering through the Serengeti to the sweet grass of the unfenced Masai Mara, the richest wildlife sanctuary in the country

Located south of Nairobi on the Tanzania border, the Masai Mara forms part of the huge Serengeti eco-system. The Mara spreads over 1510 square km of rolling plains, sudden rocky outcrops and green winding rivers.

Not only is the Mara blessed with this stunning landscape, but also its animal diversity is one of the greatest in Africa. Surrounded by the grazing lands of the Masai people, the Mara is a sanctuary for all of the "Big Five" animals: lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard. The sweet grasses and abundant water ensure a full compliment of plains game such as the impala and Thompsons gazelle. The deep river pools provide homes for hippo and crocodiles.

Each year, generally in August and September, the Mara is host to the spectacular Wildebeest Migration, one of the natural wonders of the world.

JANUARY-MARCH (Ngorongoro Crater Lodge – NCL)

The animals gather in the Southern Serengeti after November’s short rains. They calve here for about 3 months

MARCH-MAY (NCL & Grumeti River Camp)

The herds move towards the north west in search of food – the long rains in April & May provide excellent grazing conditions.

JUNE-JULY (Grumeti River Camp)

The crossings of the Grumeti River take place and the large herds can be seen in this area as they start to sweep North toward the Mara.

AUGUST (Klein’s Camp and Kichwa Tembo)

The animals move northwards. Kleins Camp has spectacular herd passing in the valley below providing wonderful views.

LATE AUGUST-EARLY SEPTEMBER (Klein’s Camp and Kichwa Tembo)

The Great Mara River crossings start to take place as the animals cross into the Masai Mara. The animals stay “put” and graze for about two months

OCTOBER – DECEMBER (Klein’s Camp and NCL)

The migration crosses back over the Mara River (this is less spectacular as the crocs are still full!!!) and the herds start to move slowly back to Southern plains following the short rains and...

THE WHOLE CYCLE BEGINS AGAIN……

Literally millions of these awkwardly shaped ungulates move across the open plains in an endless stream stretching from horizon to horizon. The movement of this vast herd is fascinating; it is seldom that a day goes by without the added bonus of watching the predators that follow the herd.

Lion, leopard, cheetah and wild dogs rely on the herd for food. Spotting one of these magnificent predators is more or less guaranteed at this time.

The breath-taking beauty of the Masai Mara and its astonishing diversity ensure that the Mara is one of the most popular stops on a Kenyan safari.
