Running Safari

Running Safari Add-on  Code Ec Safaris

After spending 10 days training with the talented Kenyan athletes, it may be the right time to slow down a little and take a look at the countryside and its animals from a walking pace!

There are a number of lovely small wildlife viewing areas very close to Eldoret, and your safari can commence with a pick up at the end of your running training. Why not try this trip on for size!

Day 1- Collected from your training camp and drive through the fertile farmlands on your way to the beautiful Mount Elgon National Park. Mount Elgon is a large extinct volcano that straddles the border between Kenya and Uganda. Reaching a height of 4,320 meters and extending over 100 km in diameter, Mount Elgon is the largest, although not the highest of Kenya's mountains. With luck, you will observe black and white Colobus monkeys and the blue monkey, as well as the giant forest hog and red forest duiker. Many leopards, buffalo and waterbuck also inhabit the Park. A wide range of birds, including the rare forest francolin, make Mount Elgon a bird watcher's delight. The forest floor, where many rare species of flower may be found, is also interesting for botanists.

Mount Elgon is also well known for its four explorable caves, by the action of water on ancient volcanic ash. The minerals contained in the rocks of the caves are vital to the well being of cattle and other grazing animals. High rainfall in this area has denuded the soil of natural salts and minerals; the caves provide the only source of salt. Elephant, buffalo, bushbuck, waterbuck, duiker, forest hogs, even the colobus and blue monkeys need a ration of salt; on Mount Elgon, they find it only in the caves. Mount Elgon is also well known for its four explorable caves.

You'll have a private vehicle, a driver/guide, camp cook and all equipment provided for you as you explore this little visited yet stunningly beautiful park.

Day 2 - A full day walking through the forests and moorlands of the Mount Elgon National Park. All meals, drinks and overnight at your private camp.

Day 3 - Head down into the Great Rift Valley to the Lake Nakuru National Park and the Mbweha Cottages. The Rift Valley is one of the wonders of the world, stretching from the Middle East, down through Africa, reaching as far as Mozambique. The staggering view, as you approach from Nairobi, Kenya is quite unbelievable. The ground suddenly disappears from under you to show the huge expanse of the great rift, stretching for thousands of miles in either direction. Whilst this stunning introduction to the Rift Valley is amazing in itself, actually descending and exploring the lakes area of Kenya's Rift Valley is a "not to be missed'" opportunity.

Lake Nakuru is a world famous park and was created to protect its stunning flocks of lesser flamingo, which literally turn the lakeshore pink in color. Notable game within the lake area is hippo and the diverse bird life.

Both black and white rhino reside in the sanctuary and Rothschild giraffe, buffalo, impala, eland, warthog, mountain reedbuck, klipspringers and black and white Colobus monkeys are all plentiful. There are excellent leopard and lion viewing opportunities as well. This park is world-renowned as a beacon for ornithologists, scientists and wildlife filmmakers.

You'll stay at the cottages while you explore the park and also enjoy game walks and night game drives on the privately owned conservation sanctuary just outside the park grounds.

Day 4 - Spend a full day inside the park, exploring this rich ecosystem with all meals and overnight at the cottages.

Day 5 - A leisurely drive up the escarpment on your way back to Nairobi where you'll have the chance to do some shopping and sightseeing before dinner and then transfer to the airport for the flight home.

Inclusive of all transfers, accommodation, meals, soft drinks, private vehicle with driver/guide and cook, park fees and activities as mentioned, this trip would be charged at between US$ 625- 1,000 per person depending on the number of people.
