Zoutpan farmhouse

Apart from the wide open vistas and breath-taking sunsets, Zoutpan boasts some of the finest examples of the unique collection of about 6,800 species of Cape fynbos (Cape Floral Kingdom) that grow only in this area of South Africa, plus approximately 150 different species of birds and endemic thatching reed that is an alternate source of income for the farm. Riding amongst the Thatching Reed

Whether travelling on business or for pleasure our facility will suit your requirements.

At Zoutpan Struishuis Guest Farm you will experience the warm Afrikaner hospitality of Engela and Bertie Horn in their stylishly decorated Cape Dutch apartment units. If you choose to dine 'at home', you will also experience 'boerekos' at its best.

You can participate in the normal farm activities, like the collection of ostrich eggs, milking of cows and feeding of orphaned lambs or horseriding. You will also find 1000 ostriches at any time on the farm, 180 birds of which will be breeding.

Carved Ostrich eggAlthough ostriches are generally thought of for primarily providing decorative feathers, Zoutpan Struishuis Guest Farm also provides leather and meat for the export market while there is great demand for the eggshells for artistic purposes. The leather is prized for its distinctive appearance, suppleness and durability, while the feathers are used in the fashion industry and in high-tech industries because of their ability to attract dust - this magnet-like attribute makes ostrich feathers a "must" in keeping computer rooms dust free, and in the automotive industry, preparing cars for the painting process.

Let Engela introduce you to the Arabian horses. Breeding Arabians is another of the programmes on the farm and the elegant, proud horses seen on the farm werf will delight your senses. Take a visit to the salt pans, after which the farm is named and cast your eyes over the array of wild geese and other water fowl which tend to congregate here.

If this is not to your liking, you can relax in the beautiful communal lounge and reading area, explore the area by enjoying walking trails in the fynbos, do some bird watching, or take scenic sundowner drives, watching the African Sunset while sipping on sundowners at the lovely rock-pool, and enjoying a magical evening around an open log-fire.

Albertinia lies in this area of South Africa that has more aloes than any other. and is a friendly, small country village at the foot of the Langeberg mountains in the Western Cape. The region is a major wheat and sheep farming area with one of the lowest crime rates in South Africa.

Visitors are attracted by the unpolluted, fresh air and moderate climate. The peaceful, rural surroundings are known for their country hospitality and large variety of unique flora.

Albertinia is well situated with easy access to popular beaches and excellent angling spots.

The aloe factory at Albertinia is the largest single source of Aloe ferox juice and gel extracted from the Aloe Ferox plant for pharmaceutical purposes and for the skincare industry.

At the mouth of the Gourits River is Gouritsmond where golden beaches, the Indian Ocean and the river mouth create a playground for water sports lovers. Farmers from the Albertinia district, who came here to get away from their everyday routine and to relax and enjoy the sea, sun and sand, built the original stone houses in the early 1920s.

There are many activities to be enjoyed such as fishing, water-skiing, canoeing and boating. A visit to the Garden Route Game Lodge, home to giraffe, white rhino, lion, elephant, kudu, zebra, wildebeest, and many other species of game, is a must. Their game drives are led by experienced game rangers who share their knowledge of big game as well as the many other antelope species, birdlife and local African folklore.

They also have a Cheetah Breeding Center
offering visitors an insight into the plight of this endangered species, and a Reptile Center where the resident Herpetologist (snake man) will share his knowledge of snakes, crocodiles and other cold-blooded creatures.

Take a relaxing guided Horseback rides in the main reserve (for the experienced rider only). Ride in harmony with nature and enjoy close up wildlife encounters in this exquisite setting, or take the energy challenge offered by mountain biking trails on the various farm roads

You could even enjoy a guided adventure trail on a 4x4 quad bike in the Gouritz River Valley, winding through scenic mountain passes and valleys, over streams and finishing up in the Gouritz River bed.
