ATTRACTIONS: The main attractions in the area are the unspoilt beaches, the numerous game reserves, the many heritage sites, (the early missionary history, frontier war history, liberation struggle, etc all of which helped shape the South Africa of today). Then there is the Xhosa culture, the rock art sites, the once famous institutions of learning like Healdtown, Lovedale and Fort Hare etc all with missionary backgrounds and places where people like Nelson Mandela, Thabo Mbeki and Sir Seretse Khama were educated. An ideal base from which to venture out on such tours whether self drive or on a guided tour is from King William's Town, which started as a mission station and became the most important garrison town in its time. To meet the needs of tourists who wish to stay over in King, the Speirs family have just opened up a Bed & breakfast in King Williams Town with magnificent views of the Amatola Mountains where much of the fighting during the frontier wars took place. Situated in a quiet setting with a beautiful garden and pool, visitors can plan their next days outing with people who have an intimate knowledge of the area and what there is to see and do. King William's Town is also the ideal base from where to spend the night at bed & breakfasts before taking on the challenging 6 day Amatola Hiking Trail rated by Getaway Magazine as the finest in South Africa. Here too, like with the Frontier War history tours, Rob played the role of trailblazer having helped plan and lay out the Amatola Trail Network. Fortunately visitors to the area will still be able to draw on Rob's knowledge of the area and the trails. A trail that Rob and Ralph highly recommend for both hikers and non-hikers alike is the Wolf River Trail where one can enjoy the best of the Amatola's without having to carry a heavy kitbag. For visitors to our country, being able to interact with local people is important. With the Wolf River Trail one can spend a night with a Xhosa family in clean accommodation specially set aside for visitors in a beautiful setting and enjoy the magnificent forests and mountain pools of the Amatola's during the day.
