Introduction to Overland Camping

OVER LAND CAMPING/ACCOMODATION TOURS

Another well known way to see South Africa and the surrounding areas, is to participate in a overland Camping trip.

These trips are either CAMPING and or LODGE, INNS AND CHALETS.

Usually most Overland trips work on specific destination areas in the Southern African area. They may be multi country combinations or South Africa by itself. They can run North to South or vice versa. Some begin and end in the same place. There are smaller trips ie to the Garden Route area or longer trips from Cape Town to Vic Falls, or Johannesburg to Nairobi.

The duration of these trips varies from 4 nights up to 31 nights. Transportation is by specialized overland camping trucks that are comfortably equipped to carry Camping gear, passengers, Kitchen/Cooking equipment, etc. Most trips are camping participatory, meaning that every one pitches in to help with varies duties. Some trips use local lodging ie small Inns, bungalows etc as opposed to Tent camping. Experienced drivers/guides accompany these trips.

While these Overland camping trips cover a lot of territory ie mileage, they are constructed so as to do this in smaller pieces and or with lay over days in between

We purposely don’t publicize prices as these changes with specials they offer, time of year etc.

Below are some trip ideas….there are a lot more, so if you don’t see your ideal date or trip combination,  . We have selected a variety of trips, to different destinations.

Trip rating: These are budget rated trips. For those who don’t like to travel in groups, deal with camping chores, and a pre scheduled trip plan that you have not to much control, then these trips wont work for you. Do not worry, we have other custom designed trips for you.

Equipment
Our vehicles and our equipment are used under extremely harsh conditions which means that ultimately everything we use has to be specifically designed and adapted for our use We are unable to simply purchase our vehicles off the shelf as such and in fact each vehicle has to be manufactured to our specific needs, within the parameters of what is available. Likewise with our equipment. Tents, tables, chairs and the like, are all specifically made for and designed by us. So remember, when things have that worn and well used look, that is because they work hard and they work well.

Clients are expected to be able to erect their own tent (quite simple), and will sleep 2 to a tent, unless obviously if the group is an odd number, 25 mm thick sleeping mats are provided on all camping trips and although they are extremely practical they are quite hard.

So be warned, bring your own self inflating mattress if you require more comfort. On quite a few tours tented camps, bungalows and even inns, and hotels may be sued. This is for your comfort and convenience but in essence the nature of the tour must still be seen as a camping orientated, participation adventure.
