OvaHimba Adventure Namibia

On the south-western coast of Namibia there is a wealth of quaint towns with unique atmosphere, desolated beaches, history, character and even nature reserves to revive flagging spirits and excite the imagination. Swakopmund is the second biggest town of the country and a popular holiday destination. It features an interesting mix of German and bohemian influences and is a lively and attractive town in the middle of the desert. This tour can added onto other packages please ask us re rates

DAY 1 - 3: Swakopmund
You will be met at Swakopmund Airport by an Afro Ventures representative and transferred to the hotel of your choice. We suggest the Swakopmund Hotel, built in and around the beautifully restored old station building, and the Hansa Hotel, a timeless classic built in 1905. The town is an eclectic mix of Bohemian and Bavarian. It is a cultural melting pot where Herero women in Victorian dress rub shoulders with hard-bitten miners, khaki-clad safari operators and weathered fishermen. We will take you on a morning tour to Cape Cross where Europeans first set foot on Namibian soil. A dolorite replica cross marks the spot where the Portuguese seafarer, Diego Cao, planted his cross in 1486.

The highlight of the trip is a full-day light aircraft safari to Kaokoland in the northern reaches of Namibia. Accompanied by a guide and a translator, you will spend the morning with an Ovahimba tribe, learning about village life. The Ovahimbas are semi-nomadic pastoralists, who still live and dress according to ancient traditions.

The women are noted for their statuesque beauty enhanced by intricate hairstyles and traditional adornments. The Ovahimba rub their bodies with red ochre and fat to protect their skins from the scorching desert sun. The air safari includes a low-level scenic flight over Damaraland, in search of desert elephant and rhino, and along the treacherous Skeleton Coast to catch glimpses of the remote shipwrecks dotting the shore-line.

The remainder of your time is free to explore the quaint town of Swakopmund¹s distinctive architecture, and its many craft stores and art galleries. At Karakulia, local artists weave magnificent woolen rugs and the Krystal Gallery is a must locally mined gems and crystals (some the size of a small car) are on display. Overnights on a bed & breakfast basis.

DAY 4: End of tour
You will be transferred to Swakopmund Airport in time for your onward flight.
