Kanana Safari Camp

shinde

Honeymoon Tent.

The camp, Kanana Camp (Setswana for 'paradise,') is located not far from the former Pom Pom camp in the remote inner reaches of the Delta.

The 8 tents (accommodating 16 beds) are built on stilts to insure a good view of the floodplains for all guests. The common facilities of the camps are also built up on stilts overlooking these floodplains. The area is an excellent walking and mokoro area.

By game viewing on foot and by mokoro, you do not have the noise of the vehicle and therefore will experience the bush in it's true form. You will be at one with nature without the intrusion of man. There will be just the sounds of the bush and your footfalls on the earth. The silence will help your ears to pick-up the previously unheard sounds of the bush usually hidden by the mechanical hum of the car.  You are on their ground on their terms!

                              campfire

Motorboat excursions to the Xo Lagoon is offered when the lagoon is in flood and game viewing in 4 x 4 vehicles is also available.

Nearby the camp, Kanana has its own airstrip.

Reports that many birds are breeding: Yellow Bill Stork, Marabou, and Open Bill Stork, Darters, Cormorants and Egrets.

Kanana camp is one of the few lucky camps in the Okavango Delta to have an exclusive heronry where many migratory water birds come to have their young from July onwards.  This is a very important nesting site for these birds and one of the few in the Delta.  The birds you are likely to see include roosting here are yellow bill stork, marabou, open bill stork, darters cormorants and slatey egrets.  Kanana are also getting regular sightings of the rare Pels fishing owl.

A wide variety of game frequent the islands around Kanana camp including impala, lechwe, leopard, lion and elephant amongst others.

During the 2003 season, there were only 16 days that leopard was NOT sighted at Kanana !  There are getting regular sightings of Pels Fishing Owl and lion at present and guests have seen Civet and hyena.
